TRAFFIC RULES IN VIRGINIA

Travelling to the Cook Out 400 is part of the overall race weekend experience, but being familiar with Virginia’s driving rules can help you avoid unnecessary stress. Most regulations are similar to those in other U.S. states, although enforcement in Virginia can be particularly strict in some areas.

Traffic flow

Across the United States, vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road. If you are not used to this, pay extra attention at junctions, when exiting parking areas and when turning near the Speedway.

Speed limits

Speed limits depend on the type of road. Residential zones are typically around 25 mph, state highways often range between 55 and 65 mph, and interstates can reach up to 70 mph. Limits may change quickly near exits or built-up areas, so watch for posted signs. Virginia State Police actively monitor speeds, and penalties for excessive speeding or reckless driving (often defined as 20 mph or more above the limit) can be significant.

Intersections and traffic lights

Traffic signals are taken seriously, and some intersections use cameras. Turning right on a red light is generally allowed after a complete stop unless signs indicate otherwise. Always give priority to pedestrians, and avoid trying to beat a yellow light if stopping safely is possible.

Alcohol and driving

Virginia enforces strict DUI laws. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08% for drivers aged 21 and over, while drivers under 21 can face penalties at just 0.02%. During major events like NASCAR weekends, sobriety checkpoints are common around Ridgeway. If you plan to drink, arrange a designated driver or use a taxi or rideshare service.

Seat belt requirements

Front-seat occupants must wear seat belts, and police can stop drivers solely for this violation. Passengers under 18 are also required to wear seat belts in the rear seats. It is safest to ensure everyone is buckled up before setting off.

Pedestrians and right of way

Drivers must yield to pedestrians at marked crosswalks and unsignalled intersections. At four-way stops, the vehicle that arrives first proceeds first; if two vehicles arrive at the same time, priority usually goes to the one on the right. Around the Speedway, pedestrian traffic can be heavy, so drive carefully and stay alert.

If you are stopped by the police

If signaled to pull over, do so safely on the right side of the road. At night, choose a well-lit area if possible. Keep your hands visible on the steering wheel, follow the officer’s instructions and remain calm and respectful.
